What Type Of Money Does Mexico Use

Sometimes, neither the bad or the good guys win. How can you end a story, when there really is no ending? Drug trafficking is still something that happens today – if anything, it's more prevalent than ever. People like El Chapo are still alive to this day. Pablo Escobar, Amado Carrillo Fuentes, and more are dead, but others have taken their place. That's why, I feel like Narcos: Mexico didn't really end, despite the third season being announced as the series finale.

Season three of the original Narcos show did wrap a bow on the stories it told. Pablo Escobar, the Cali cartel – these were stories that had endings. However, many of the stories from Narcos: Mexico don't have endings – so, how does Netflix end the show? In my opinion, they did it well. It was a satisfying ending that tied up some stories, while leaving some open-ended for the viewers.

How Do You End an On-Going Story?

I do want to say that there were some stories that were rushed to at the end, but I felt that it was either because these characters were done really well by the actors who played them and real life is more disappointing than fiction. Or, it's because there was so much to cover; how could they have enough time? The Narcos franchise has always been full of a lot of characters, but usually focused on a singular player. Seasons one and two focused around Pablo Escobar, while season three centered around the Cali cartel. Season one and two were primarily centered around Felix Gallardo, while season three has a lot of people it needed to cover.

Lord of the Skies

Narcos: Mexico season three's main focus in many ways is Amado Carrillo Fuentes. In season three of Narcos, we saw Amado more carefree – fun, playful. By the time we get to the final season of Narcos: Mexico, we can feel the heavy weight of the drug world on his shoulders. A performance that actor José María Yazpik really excelled with. I think it's fair to say that this season was stolen by Yazpik, who brought a certain somberness to his performance as the infamous drug trafficker. In real life, Amado was a dangerous man who hurt a lot of people. While the show has never shied away from showing these things (and it never makes excuses), it did show a very human side to Amado's character. I watched Yazpik do a really beautiful job this season. While I'm not sure I ever rooted for any trafficker in this franchise, I did feel bad seeing this fictionalized version of Amado so desperately want to get away from his life – and me fully knowing what happened in real life.

I Definitely Wanted More El Mayo

Some characters who were incredibly present in the previous season took a little bit more of a backseat – such as El Chapo. While others, such as the Arellanos; are more present than ever. I feel like season three really did characters like Enedina Arellano Felix really stood out and I loved what Mayra Hermosillo did with her character this season. Other characters who stood out were new characters such as Alberto Guerra as El Mayo – who I really wanted more of. His time on screen really stood out and I feel like he could really carry a season on his own.

Where Does Walt Breslin Go?

Of course, I'm going to talk about my favorite character in the Narcos: Mexico franchise, which is Walt Breslin – played by Scoot McNairy. In season two, Walt was gun-ho about taking down those responsible for killing Kiki Camarena. What happens to Walt when that's all over? Well, it seems that the answer to that isn't as simple as it seems. Walt is a DEA agent through and through and we know from his conversation with Pablo Acosta in season two that Walt doesn't see himself as someone with a bright future. However, something gets introduced in season three that adds more to Walt's character. Something where it seems that maybe this is Walt's chance for something more…but, will he take it? As usual, McNairy did a great job as Walt and I'm sad to see his character go since this is the last season, but it was a worthy end for Walt Breslin.

Rating: 4/5

Narcos: Mexico season three made me want more – not because it was an incomplete story or because it didn't do a good job, but because it did such a great job. It wasn't the bang-bang shoot 'em up finale that maybe you were expecting. It wasn't constant action like season two. Season three both took its time telling a more human story, while also covering a lot of ground. I was at first skeptical of a new host, but I came to really enjoy Luisa Rubino as newcomer reporter Andrea Nuñez. Having a journalist, instead of a DEA agent; as the narrator was refreshing – though, I did miss McNairy's voice throughout the season. And let me say, the episodes directed by Wagner Moura (who played Pablo Escobar in Narcos) were some of my favorite.

Narcos: Mexico season three hits Netflix on November 5th – it's a worthwhile story that does each character justice.

Make sure you check out the interviews I did while attending a virtual press junker for Narcos: Mexico season three. I got the wonderful opportunity to speak with McNairy, Yazpik, Hermosillo, Rubino, screenwriter Carlo Bernard, and newcomer Luis Gerardo Méndez – who plays Victor Tapia in season three.
